Robert Torricelli is an American politician and attorney, born on August 27, 1951, in Paterson, New Jersey. He is a former United States Senator from New Jersey, serving from 1997 to 2003.
Toricelli started his political career as a member of the United States House of Representatives from New Jersey's 9th district, serving from 1983 to 1997. He was known for his liberal views, championing civil rights and environmental issues. He was also a leading voice in international affairs, particularly in Latin America, where he advocated for democratic reforms and the protection of human rights.
In the Senate, Torricelli continued to prioritize international affairs, serving on the Foreign Relations Committee and as chairman of the Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Peace Corps, and Narcotics Affairs. He was also a strong advocate for gun control, campaign finance reform, and healthcare reform.
Toricelli's political career was cut short by a campaign finance scandal, resulting in his decision not to seek re-election in 2002. He was found to have accepted illegal campaign contributions and was fined $210,000 by the Federal Election Commission.
